About the book

Nobody gets through life with a perfect record. Rob Lancit certainly isn't claiming one.

In Take My Advice, I'm Not Using It, Rob looks back at family, relationships, fatherhood, career turns, financial decisions, regrets, and the lessons hiding inside them. Some stories are funny. Some aren't. None require him to pretend he always knew what he was doing.

The book began as something personal: a way to leave the real stories behind for his children. Not the polished version. As he wrote, he realized the details were his, but the mistakes, regrets and lessons were not unique to him.

Each chapter tells a true story and ends with a simple lesson. The thread through all of it is ownership: not blaming circumstances, not rewriting history, just owning the decisions and what came of them.

It is not a motivational book and it is not a step-by-step guide. It is personal, often sarcastic, and honest about the fact that growing older does not mean you stop figuring things out.

Who it is for

If you have ever thought, "If I knew then what I know now."

Parents

For anyone raising kids

It was written for his own. The stories behind the lessons, including the ones where he was certain and wrong.

Gen X, and nearby

For people who laugh first

The publisher calls it honest, funny, self-deprecating and unmistakably Gen X. That is accurate.

Anyone with a past

For people who own their decisions

No guru, no formula. One man telling the truth about how he lived and what he is still working on.
